In a bid to retain the best minds and to uplift the New Zealand economy further, the government of the New Zealand has made a historic move. The government has decided to open up the post study work visa rights for international students. This move by the government has been welcomed by the stakeholders across the board as with this initiative the government would not only be able to retain the best talent that they require, but also attract more and more foreign students who will find it more lucrative now to study in New Zealand.

The new rule was announced in a historic announcement on August 8, and is expected to come into implementation phase on 26th November, 2018. After the implementation, the changes will extend the post study work items available to the international students in New Zealand. Also the other changes that may be expected are the removal of employer assisted post study work visas and introduction of new incentives for study outside of Auckland.

The new post study work visa policy will provide the following:

    • The main element of the changes that are soon to be coming in force includes replacement of employer assisted work visas to open work visas. It is evident from the statement issued by the Immigration New Zealand that quotes “your work visa won’t be linked to any employer and the employer assisted post study work visa will no longer exist. Student will not need a job offer to get a post study work visa”.

    • Those students who are studying in the New Zealand Qualifications Framework will receive a 1 year open work visa. It should also be noted that this provision also implies to those students who are undertaking non-degree studies at Level 7 in the qualification framework.

    • The students who are enrolled at Level 7 in graduate diploma programs leading to a professional designation will receive an open work visa for a period of two years in which they would be able to find the suitable employer.

  • Students who are enrolled in degree studies at Level 7 or above (undergraduate or higher) will receive a three year open work visa.

In an effort to make this transition smoother and more effective for the current students and their institutes, the government has also introduced transition measures, including a detailed brief explaining the policy for current and prospective students.
