The Australian Department of Home Affairs is continually making updates and changes to the immigration visa schemes. Just a couple of months ago, we witnessed that the minimum threshold for skilled worker applications was raised from 60 to 65. Now the DIBP has made further recent changes to visa sub class 489 that is Skilled Regional Visa.

The Northern Inland NSW has recently announced some additional requirements as well as changes pertaining to the popular visa 489. The updates include many changes which comprise of inclusion of minimum pass mark in order to obtain a subclass 489 visa, secondly removal of certain occupations from the regional list and the criteria for obtaining a release letter (this is applicable to existing 489 visa holders).

Now the potential candidates who are wishing to apply to Regional Development Australia Northern Inland for Skilled Regional Skilled Sponsorship, they are expected to make a firm commitment and make a genuine effort to satisfy 489 visa conditions in the region i.e. at least 12 months full time employment in the region as well as living in the regional area for a period of minimum 2 years.

The prospective applicants are also expected to make genuine attempt to settle in the regional diaspora by finding work in Northern Inland NSW. Also, if an applicant is applying from within the Australia, they are expected to relocate to the region within 3 months of receiving the visa grant notice.

It should also be noted here that for sub class 489 visa, an applicant is also subjected to Condition 8549. This means that an applicant whose visa is subjected to the condition 8549 must live, work and study only in an area specified.

The following occupations were removed from the RDA Northern Inland Occupation List on Thursday 11 October 2018: 

    • Registered Nurse (Aged Care) 254412

 

    • Registered Nurse (Child & Family Health) 254413

 

    • Registered Nurse (Community Health) 254414

 

    • Registered Nurse (Critical Care and Emergency) 254415

 

    • Registered Nurse (Medical) 254418

 

  • Registered Nurse (Medical Practice) 254421 

The following occupations were removed from the RDA Northern Inland Occupation List on Friday 28 September 2018. Applications received before this time will be considered BUT they must be complete applications, with all requirements met or a negative outcome may result: 

    • Registered Nurse (Perioperative) 254423

 

    • Registered Nurse (Surgical) 254424

 

    • Chef 351311

 

    • Cook 351411

 

    • Structural Engineer 233214

 

    • Construction Project Manager 133111

 

    • Engineering Manager 133211

 

  • Geotechnical Engineer 233212

As for the changes in the release letter, 489 visa holders shall not be granted a release letter releasing them from their assigned region unless they show that they have taken serious and genuine steps to relocate to the regional area through for instance seeking employment.
