As many of us have witnessed from the recent changes consisting of various omits and substitutes in the Australian immigration policy by the Department of Home Affairs, it is evident that the requirements are now getting stricter and shrewder. This is imperative from the fact that now the minimum point’s threshold has been increased from 60 to 65 and furthermore there have been introduced much other change of provider Melbourne to the system.

In another move that would probably have a rather long term repercussions, the Department of Home Affairs has now decreased the maximum age requirement to be considered for skilled permanent visas to 45. It should be noted that previously, this age bracket was till 50. This has limited the future immigration prospects of many of the prospective applicants and in practice this requirement is further limited to age limit of 39 as after this, getting an a Skill Select invitation becomes harder.

This change was introduced last week for General Skilled Migration (GSM) visas, including Skilled Independent Visa (189), Skilled Nominated Visa (190) and Skilled Regional Subclass (489) with effect from July 1st 2018. In lieu of the Migration Legislation last year in July, the maximum age for which a visa applicant could claim points was lowered from 50 to 45 years.

The Department of Home Affairs mentions that lowering the maximum age at which visa applicants and their respective spouses/partners can claim points for Australian immigration may benefit the Australian economy at large because Australia needs young, energetic and technically proficient migrants who will contribute towards a better and more prosperous Australia and contribute efficiently and effectively to Australian economy. Furthermore, elderly and middle aged immigrants may also pose a burden on the overall incurred health costs of the Australian health care system and support services.

For permanent skilled visas, an applicant needs roughly 70 points in order to be successful. These points primarily come from an applicant’s age, education, work experience, English proficiency etc. Applicants between the age of 26 and 32 get the maximum points for age. There are additional points if an applicant has a state nomination.
