If you are an international student studying in Australia, than you must be aware about the visa type ‘Temporary Graduate Visa’ sub-class 485. The Australian Temporary Graduate Visa allows international graduates to live, work and study in Australia after the completion of their studies. It also gives graduates a fantastic opportunity to gain further work experience in their chosen field and provides a viable route to permanent settlement in Australia.

It should be noted here that the Australian Graduate Visa has two types of streams.

    • The Post Study Work stream has more viability as compared to the other stream and therefore, majority of the graduates opt for this visa. It has a validity period of 2- 4 years, which depends on the duration of your study program and your qualifications. Another advantage can be that the graduate do not have to pass a skills assessment for the Post Study Work Stream and also there is no particular restrictions on the area of study.

  • However, on the other hand, the Graduate Work Stream is valid for just 18 months and the Graduate Work Stream visa specifies that the candidate is studying in an occupation that is on the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

Another point to be noted is to apply for 485 visa, the candidate must have completed a minimum of 2 years study in Australia. Also, the course eligibility differs for both the Post study work stream and the Graduate Work stream. It is also worth noting here that the student can include more than one course, in this 2 year time frame even if the student has taken a study break between the courses. If the student is applying under the Graduate Visa Stream than all of the courses will to fall under the skills occupations list.

Another important factor here is that for the Graduate Work stream of the 485 visa, it is also obligatory to obtain a positive skills assessment in the nominated occupation. However, the skills assessment do not have to be completed before the lodging of the 485 visa application, but the candidate must provide evidence that they have lodged their skills assessment when they submit the application.

A letter of completion shall also have to be included along with the 485 visa application that must thoroughly outline the exact study dates and details/qualifications of the course completed. Also, in order to qualify for the visa, the completed course also needs to be registered for at least 92 weeks on CRICOS. In addition to this, proof of Health Insurance is also mandatory to be submitted. This includes your and any of your family’s insurance. Evidence of English language competence is also required if the student is from a non-English speaking country.

Many students rather take the application process and the lodging of the 485 visa rather carelessly and then in case of any unfortunate outcome, they are faced with a daunting situation so it is always better to plan ahead for this crucial process.
