Major Changes in Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) VISA 187 – What It Implies For PR Aspiring Professional?

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (Subclass 187) is a visa type that grants permanent residence to those skilled workers who are looking to work in regional Australia. It is a very important visa category which will go through some major changes to be expected in March 2018.

The new changes will reflect more vigorous, selective and tough requirements for aspiring candidates who are planning to get a permanent residency in regional areas of Australia. There are changes in mainly three categories:

  • Experience required
  • Occupation
  • And reduced age limit.

These points can further be elaborated for readers ease down below:

Work Experience:

The first major change in this category is the enforcing of a 3 year post qualification/degree work requirement and that too only in the relevant field. To further break this down, this imposes the fact that from March 2018 onwards, fresh graduates who were looking to get PR will no longer be eligible because of the work requirement. This is in stark contrast to the current rules that impose no such restriction of work experience.

Occupations:

As many of the readers might be aware of the federal immigration’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL), similarly there is a Regional List (RSMSOL) that currently endures 673 occupations. But on the other hand, from March onwards, visa applicants of 187 category will now be restricted to the newly released MLTSSL. There are two consequences of this on graduates, firstly, there are tens of occupations that are no longer in demand in regional areas so candidates possessing degree in those areas may become ineligible and on the other hand, additional occupations may also become available pertaining to the demand in the market.

Age Limit:

The current maximum age limit for candidates is 49 years, but after the changes expected in March, the age limit will be reduced to that 45 only. This means fewer chances and time span for aspiring candidates. Furthermore, there have also been suggestions for sponsoring employers that employers having certain income slabs will have to contribute a certain sum towards Skilling Australians Fund.

Pertaining to all these conditions, it is imperative for candidates to start their application process without any further delay and also consult expert counselors for prompt assistance to increase their chances of getting a brighter future in Australia.
